The global economic landscape is evolving rapidly, with emerging economies playing an increasingly important role in shaping international trade, investment and financial cooperation. At the heart of this transformation is BRICS+, a growing partnership of emerging economies that is redefining global commerce and creating new opportunities across the Global South.
For India, this evolution represents more than economic growth—it presents an opportunity to strengthen its position as a trusted global financial and commercial partner.
The Evolution of BRICS+
BRICS was formally established in 2006, with the first meeting of the BRIC Foreign Ministers held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The inaugural BRIC Summit followed in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009, bringing together Brazil, Russia, India and China to promote greater economic cooperation among emerging economies.
In 2010, South Africa joined the grouping, expanding BRIC into BRICS. The alliance has continued to evolve with the admission of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as full members in January 2024, followed by Indonesia in January 2025. During 2025, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam joined as BRICS Partner Countries, further expanding the bloc's global reach.
Today, BRICS+ represents one of the world's most influential platforms for cooperation among emerging economies, encompassing a significant share of global population, international trade and economic output.
India's BRICS Chairship: A Defining Opportunity
As Chair of BRICS in 2026, India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, bringing together leaders to advance cooperation under the theme:
Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.
The BRICS agenda has expanded well beyond economic collaboration and today is structured around three core pillars:
● Political & Security Cooperation
● Economy & Finance
● Cultural & People-to-People Exchanges
Within these pillars, member countries continue to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, financial services, food and energy security, digital innovation, climate resilience and reforms to the international financial architecture.
India's leadership presents a valuable opportunity to strengthen economic partnerships, promote resilient supply chains and reinforce its role as a leading voice for the Global South.
GIFT City: India's International Financial Gateway
